Personal Profile

Rev. Dr. HyunHui Kim

The Reverend Doctor HyunHui Kim is the first woman and person of color to serve as the pastor of the Cranford UMC in its 150-year history. She was born, raised, and educated in South Korea, but followed God’s calling to New Jersey in 2006. She completed her Master of Divinity degree and her Ph.D. in Theological and Philosophical Studies at Drew Theological School. She uses her deep theological and philosophical understanding of race, gender, sexuality, and social class along with East-West comparative studies to enrich ministries challenged by the complexity of a global world. As a constructive theologian, she is passionate about keeping faith vitally connected to the contemporary world and its pressing concerns. Rev. Dr. Kim is also passionate about justice ministry, which supports the lives of the oppressed and marginalized people, enacts solidarity with them, and cultivates healing spaces for their wholeness and wellbeing. She understands her lived experiences as a female and ethnic minority in terms of privileged access to justice ministry. What she aims to accomplish through justice ministry is to expand the kin(g)dom of God that Jesus talked about over and over to his followers, seeking a radically inclusive community. Rev. Dr. Kim envisions Cranford UMC bringing the vision of Jesus into the Cranford community by becoming a bridge to connect all people with each other and with God while standing for justice, equity, and dignity for each and every individual. All are invited to fulfil such a vision together at the Cranford UMC and to experience the healing and liberating power of God in our community!
